Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals are proud to announce that Scott Walford has been selected by the Montreal Canadiens in Round 3, 68th overall, in the 2017 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft in Chicago, Illinois today.
“This is an exciting time for Scott,” said President and General Manager Cameron Hope. “Being selected by an NHL club is a nice reward for his time and hard work so far, and a special achievement.”
In his second year in the WHL, Walford played in 60 games with the Royals where he registered 30 points (6g-24a) and 36 minutes in penalties. The 6-2, 193 lb blueliner finished the year as the second-highest scoring defenceman on the team behind signed LA Kings prospect Chaz Reddekopp. Walford tied the franchise mark for most points by a defenceman in a single game at four (1g-3a) in February of last season.
“It’s a surreal feeling to go to such a historic franchise, and I’m happy to share that with my family, friends, and the whole Victoria organization,” said Walford. “My life long goal is to play in the NHL and this puts me one step closer.”
Over 98 regular season games in the WHL, the native of Coquitlam, BC has tallied seven goals and 34 assists for 41 points, and 48 minutes in penalties. Walford has also taken part in 14 playoff games where he scored six points (2g-4a) to go with six penalty minutes.
At the end of the 2016-17 season, Walford was named the Royals’ Wallace Driving School Most Dedicated Player.
Walford becomes the 11th player to be drafted in the NHL in Victoria Royals’ history. Steven Hodges became the first Royals’ player to be drafted when he was selected 84th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
