ROYALS’ SEASON ENDS IN OVERTIME MARATHON AGAINST SILVERTIPS

Victoria edged 3-2 by Everett in fifth OT frame; Royals and Silvertips set CHL record for longest game.

Victoria, BC- The Victoria Royals were defeated 3-2, in a contest that saw five overtime periods, on Sunday evening and fell to the Silvertips in Round 1 of the best-of-seven series four games to two.

Tonight’s 151 minute and 36 second contest marks the longest game in the Canadian Hockey League playoff history. The record was previously held by the Victoriaville Tigers and the Hull Olympiques in 1999 when they participated in a 146 minute and 31 second contest.

The longest playoff game in Western Hockey League history was 136 minutes and 56 seconds between the Kamloops Blazers and the Kootenay Ice.

Royals’ netminder Griffen Outhouse started for the homeside and turned aside 72 out of the 75 pucks fired his way. Carter Hart was in goal for Everett and stopped 64 out of the 66 shots he faced.

Everett forward Cal Babych scored two goals including the game-winner, which came 11:36 into the fifth overtime. Defenceman Noah Juulsen tallied the other marker.

Victoria’s goals were registered by Regan Nagy and Jared Dmytriw.

Victoria held a mark of 1/4=25.0% on the man advantage, while Everett went 0/4=0.0% on the powerplay.
