Game 1 is a 7:05 p.m. puck drop Saturday at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, while Game 2 is a 5:05 p.m. start Sunday evening.

Fans wishing to attend the Royals’ first two WHL Playoff games are encouraged to call 250-220-7777, visit or stop by the Select Your Tickets box office at their earliest convenience as the club’s previous three home games have sold out.

Victoria enters the 2014 WHL Playoffs as the third seed in the Western Conference and 10th in the final BMO CHL Top 10 rankings after their 48-20-1-3 regular season record set franchise marks for both wins and points. The Royals will face Spokane (40-26-3-3) in the first round who enter the post-season as the Western Conference’s sixth seed.

The Royals’ balanced scoring and team defence will be keys to success in their first round series against the Chiefs. Victoria saw six players post 20 or more goals during the 2013-14 regular season while holding opposing teams to just 2.51 goals per game, the second-lowest average in the WHL.

Keeping the puck out of the net was a team effort by the Royals all year long, but the goaltending tandem of Patrik Polivka and Coleman Vollrath played a large role in limiting goals against. Polivka posted a 28-12-0-2 record with five shutouts as well as a 2.56 goals against average and a .915 save percentage during the regular season. Not to be outdone, Vollrath put up 20 wins of his own, a 2.29 goals against average and a WHL-best .928 save percentage.

Victoria’s goaltenders and defence will be tested in the first round by Bob Clarke Trophy winner and the WHL’s leading scorer Mitch Holmberg. The Spokane forward put up an impressive 118 points (62g-56a) this year to capture the scoring title. Playing alongside Holmberg for the Chiefs is another offensive threat in Mike Aviani, who notched 81 points (38g-43a) in the regular season.

Reid Gow (6g-56a) and Jason Fram (6g-51a) also generate scoring from Spokane’s back end in front of Eric Williams, the Chiefs’ expected starting goaltender. Williams carried the load in goal for Spokane this year with a 33-19-2-2 record, four shutouts, a 2.67 goals against average and a .906 save percentage.

The Royals will lean on a variety of players to get the puck past Williams in the series. Brandon Magee led the team in scoring with 67 points (25g-42a) and was also named the club’s National Bank Most Valuable Player at Victoria’s annual Awards Ceremony on Thursday. Five other Royals posted more than 50 points during the regular season, including Austin Carroll and his team-leading 34 goals. Trade acquisitions Axel Blomqvist (24g-32a) and defenceman Travis Brown (14g-39a) have bolstered Victoria’s offence, while Steven Hodges (21g-26a) has bounced back after missing 20 games due to injury this year.
