Edmonton, AB – Tuesday night at Rexall Place, the Victoria Royals visited the Edmonton Oil Kings in the two clubs’ final game before the holiday break. The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start in net, while the Oil Kings looked to Tristan Jarry.
Edmonton opened the scoring 4:30 into the game with a goal from Mitchell Moroz. Matt Dykstra later tied the game for the Royals at the 11:37 mark with his first career WHL goal. The Edmonton, AB native saw his shot sail wide, but the puck ricocheted off the glass before deflecting off Jarry and into the net. Victoria took the lead at 16:36 when Brandon Magee left the puck for Axel Blomqvist who fired a shot from the slot shot through the legs of Jarry. The Royals then added to their lead just 28 seconds later when Ben Walker made a great toe drag move around a defender on the right wing before he placed a wrist shot over Jarry’s right shoulder. The Royals held the 3-1 advantage after 20 minutes of play.
Victoria lit the lamp early in the second frame when Jack Palmer scored his first goal in a Royals uniform just 49 seconds in. The puck laid loose on the goal line for a moment before Palmer poked it in to give the Royals a 4-1 lead. Edmonton later cut the lead in half at 18:20 when Lane Bauer snapped a shot past Polivka on a powerplay. The Royals would kill off a penalty to end the period and head into the dressing room up by a 4-2 score.
Edmonton made it a one-goal game when Victoria, BC product Dysin Mayo struck at the 8:13 mark of the final frame. The Oil Kings pressed for the equalizer in the third period, throwing 16 shots towards Polivka, but the Royals’ goaltender held his ground. Magee sealed the victory for the Royals with an empty-netter at 19:08 as Victoria took the win to post a franchise best 23-13-0-2 record at the holiday break. Victoria 5 Edmonton 3.
Victoria went 0/2=0.0% on the powerplay, while Edmonton went 1/5=20.0%. The Oil Kings outshot the Royals 40-27.
The Royals return to Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre after the holiday break when they host the Prince George Cougars for a two-game set beginning on Friday, December 27th. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
