Victoria, BC – In a Saturday night tilt at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Royals took on the Prince George Cougars in the two teams’ second meeting in as many nights. The Royals gave Coleman Vollrath the start in net while the Cougars countered with Ty Edmonds.

Ben Walker opened the scoring for the Royals when he notched his 16th goal of the season at the 6:01 mark. Brandon Magee centered the puck to Walker from the bottom of the right face-off circle before he quickly snapped a shot between the pads of Edmonds. Jack Palmer increased Victoria’s lead just 1:21 later when he took advantage of an Austin Carroll rebound in the low slot for his third goal in three games. Magee then added another goal at the 14:57 mark. The Edmonton, AB native received a pass from Brett Cote in the high slot and fired a shot past the blocker of Edmonds. Axel Blomqvist picked up his fourth goal in two games late in the opening frame. At the 19:09 mark, Steven Hodges centered the puck to Blomqvist who made a nifty deke around Edmonds to his forehand to make it 4-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Prince George got on the board early in the second period when Klarc Wilson’s shot from behind the net was deflected in at the 2:41 mark. Carroll later capitalized on a two-man advantage at the 13:03 mark to give the Royals a 5-1 lead. Magee picked up his second assist of the game when he found Carroll in front of Edmonds and the Scottsdale, AZ native buried a shot glove side. The two teams exchanged powerplay chances late in the period, but the score remained 5-1 after two periods of play.

The Cougars took advantage of a two-man advantage of their own at the 6:58 mark of the third frame when Todd Fiddler pounced on a rebound. The Royals’ penalty kill unit was busy throughout the first half of the period, but came through with the help of timely saves from Vollrath to kill off three of four Prince George chances. The home side polished the game off with strong defensive play to record the two-game sweep and post their 25th win of the season. Royals 5 Cougars 2.

Victoria went 1/6= 16.7% on the powerplay, while Prince George went 1/7= 14.3%. The Cougars outshot the Royals 35-29.

Victoria will now travel south to take on the Everett Silvertips on New Year’s Eve before returning home to take on the Silvertips in an afternoon contest on New Year’s Day. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre and a skate with the players will immediately follow the game.
