Victoria, BC – Saturday night at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre saw the Victoria Royals host the Vancouver Giants in the club’s annual Teddy Bear Toss Night. The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start in net, while the Giants answered with Payton Lee.

Prior to puck drop, Royals fans were brought to their feet by Army Captain Gordon Hodson’s emotional reunion with his family. Victoria used the crowd’s energy to open the scoring 3:51 into the first stanza and send thousands of teddy bears sailing onto the ice. Logan Nelson took a shot on net before Austin Carroll buried the rebound for his second consecutive Teddy Bear Toss goal. Steven Hodges later gave Victoria their second goal at 14:47, but Vancouver struck back with a powerplay goal at the 17:54 mark and the Royals headed to the first intermission up by a 2-1 score.

Thomas Foster scored for Vancouver just 1:37 into the second frame to tie the game at two and Mason Geertsen put the visitors in front with a goal at the 4:49 mark. Shaun Dosanjh’s marker at 9:34 put the Giants up by two before Colman Vollrath took over Polivka’s duties between the pipes. The Giants counted two more from Carter Popoff and Dalton Thrower before the end of the stanza as they took a 6-2 lead into the second intermission.

Victoria got one back on the powerplay 5:32 into the final frame when Brandon Magee set up Ben Walker in the slot. The Royals continued to attack and Hodges picked up his second of the night at 14:42 to bring the home team within two goals. Victoria nearly struck again moments after the Hodges tally, but the Royals were unable to draw closer and Vancouver’s Cain Franson sealed a Giants win with a late marker. Giants 7 Royals 4.

Victoria went 1/4= 25.0% on the powerplay, while Vancouver went 3/6= 50.0%. The Royals were outshot 26-25.

Victoria now heads out on a five-game road trip before the Christmas break that begins Tuesday night in Vancouver. The next home game for the Royals goes on Friday, December 27th when the Prince George Cougars visit Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
