ROYALS ANNOUNCE 2016 TRAINING CAMP SCHEDULE
Victoria to open camp Wednesday, August 24th with all on-ice sessions open to the public.
The Victoria Royals today announced the schedule for their 2016 draft, rookie, and main training camps set to take place at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
During training camp, the Royals will honour three individuals from Victoria’s local media who have dedicated their careers to covering local sports in Al Ferraby, Cliff LeQuesne (Le-Kane) and Jordan Cunningham.
Team Ferraby is named after the current host of CFAX 1070’s morning show, Al Ferraby who has been broadcasting for over 25 years and has been a member of the station since 1994. Team LeQuesne pays homage to the host of 100.3 The Q’s Morning Show, and the Royals’ Public Address Announcer, Cliff LeQuesne. Team Cunningham is named after CTV News Sports Anchor Jordan Cunningham who won the Edward R. Murrow award for Best Sports Reporting in 2006 and for Video Sports Reporting in 2010.
Last year Team Duffy, named for CFAX 1070 broadcaster Steve Duffy, captured the 2015 Marmot Mug at rookie camp with a 3-2-1 record, while Team King finished main camp with a 3-0-1 mark.
The Royals’ Training Camp opens on Wednesday, August 24th with a draft camp for players selected in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. The draft camp will be the first chance for fans to watch Victoria’s 2016 draft selections.
Main camp will be made up of returning players from the club’s 2015-16 roster, free agent invitees born from 1996 – 1999 and selected players from this year’s draft and rookie camps. The players will be divided into three teams for on-ice sessions that begin on Monday, August 29th and run through Tuesday, August 30th.
Rookie camp begins on Friday, August 26th and concludes on Sunday, August 28th. The rosters are comprised of players born in 2000 and 2001, skaters who have been drafted or listed by the Royals and free agent invites.
