Silvertips defeat Royals 3-1 in tight Saturday night contest

Everett Silvertips defenceman Olen Zellweger led the way with two assists in a 3-1 victory over the Victoria Royals on Saturday night.
Royals goaltender Campbell Arnold stood strong in the Victoria net all game, making several key saves in the loss and earning the game’s second star.
Everett goaltender Koen MacInnes stopped all but one shot on the way to his 15th win of the season.
Impressions were good to start the game for the Royals as forward Reggie Newman capitalized on an early powerplay opportunity, making it 1-0 after redirecting a Gannon Laroque point shot for his fourth goal of the year at 6:29. Their lead would last until 16:54 of the first, when Everett forward Hunter Campbell (16) would strike on his team’s own man advantage to tie the game, where it would remain heading into the second period.

That score would hold until 11:18 of the second when Everett forward Caden Zaplitny made it 2-1 for the Silvertips with his second goal of the year. His team would carry the one goal advantage into the final frame.
The game would remain tight until late in the third, when Silvertips forward Dylan Anderson tipped one past Royals goaltender Campbell Arnold at 15:35 for his second goal of the year, opening up a 3-1 lead.
Despite a number of opportunities late in regulation, Victoria was unable to manage a comeback and the final buzzer would sound with the Silvertips earning the 3-1 victory.
The win improves the ‘Tips’ record to 35-7-2-4 as they tighten their grip at the top of the Western Conference, while the Royals find themselves sliding further down the table at 13-30-4-1.
Both teams will be in action on Family Day, with Everett making the trip north to take on the Kamloops Blazers, and Victoria heading back to the Langley Events Centre for a match against the Vancouver Giants. Puck drop for that game is set for 2:00pm on Monday, Feb. 21.
The next Victoria Royals home game will be on Saturday, February 26 at 7:05 p.m. against the Vancouver Giants. The game will have a “Hockey For All” theme presented by realtor Charlsey Macgregor and will highlight diversity and inclusivity.
